SCHISTOSOMIASIS & NTDS
Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the sales of Into the Rainforest will go to the work of healthcare leaders in underdeveloped communities who are educating and treating those affected by tropical diseases such as Schistosomiasis. On this page, we will post updates of that giving and updates from our partner, Sustainable Medical Missions.
Schistosomiasis is considered a NTDS, a Neglected Tropical Disease. These diseases affect over 1 billion children worldwide and are inexpensive to treat. Also known as Bilharzia, Schistosomiasis is a parasite found in contaminated water. Clean water efforts are a critical element in eliminating NTDS like Schistosomiasis. Yet, there are over 200 million people infected with the disease—many of them children. The good news is that it only costs about eight cents per tablet to treat. The more difficult part is establishing a medical presence in affected areas in order to treat and educate those communities.
We have teamed up with Sustainable Medical Missions, an organization that supports indigenous healthcare leaders who bring healing to communities impacted by Neglected Tropical Diseases.
